In June 2024, Germany will introduce a new points-based immigration program to attract more international talent. This new path will be introduced in addition to existing immigration routes.

If you are an international professional looking to migrate to Germany but are having trouble finding a job from abroad, the points-based Opportunity Card could be the solution for you.

It will allow you to come to Germany and search for a job, for up to one year. You will need to cover your living expenses during your stay in Germany, but you will be able to work part-time in any job until you get a full-time job in your field of expertise.

To qualify for the opportunity card, you must meet three basic requirements and reach at least 6 points in 8 categories.

Basic requirements:

  • You hold a university degree or have completed a professional/vocational training of at least 2 years at an accredited institution in the issuing country.
  • You can prove that you can cover your living expenses yourself during the entire stay – through sufficient financial means on a blocked account or a declaration of commitment by a German resident.
  • You can prove that you speak German at least on level A1 OR English on level B2 – through certificates that are officially recognized by German authorities.

Points

If you hold a university degree or have completed a professional/vocational training that is already fully recognized in Germany, you will receive 6 points for it and don’t have to collect additional points. If not, you’ll have to collect at least 6 points in 8 different categories.

Where to apply?

You can apply at the German embassy in your home country, at the German embassy in another country where you hold legal residence, or at an immigration office in Germany, if you hold a citizenship that enables you to apply for long-term residence permits within Germany.
